What is a lip plumper?
Plumper (from English) plump — plump) is a cosmetic product designed to temporarily increase the volume of lips and enhance their natural color.
The product works by stimulating blood flow to capillaries or actively retaining moisture in the upper layers of the epidermis. It contains irritants (menthol, capsaicin, ginger extract) or moisturizing ingredients (hyaluronic acid, collagen).
The visual effect is a slight plumping effect, smoothing of fine wrinkles on the lips and creating a glossy finish.
Main types of plumbers
Stimulating plumpers contain chili pepper extract, cinnamon, menthol, or camphor. They produce a characteristic tingling or burning sensation, providing instant but short-term volume through a rapid blood flow.
Moisturizing alternatives are based on hyaluronic acid, peptides, and oils. These products work by attracting water molecules and filling wrinkles. The effect is slower to take effect, causes less discomfort, and lasts longer.
The cosmetics market offers a variety of formats: liquid glosses with an applicator (the most common option), solid balms in sticks, creamy lipsticks, and concentrated serums.
The shade palette ranges from completely transparent glossy textures to densely pigmented options. Shimmer is often added to the formula for additional optical volume.
How to use
Before applying the plumper, it's recommended to use a gentle lip scrub. This helps remove flaking and ensures even distribution of the active ingredients.
As part of a daytime makeup look, apply the product alone to clean lips. This creates a natural, moist, plump effect.
For evening or accent makeup, the plumper is combined with other products. It's applied over matte lipstick or lip liner (primarily in the center of the lips), creating a visual 3D volume.
Apply the product strictly along the lip contour. Applying beyond the contours may cause redness around the mouth. Stimulating plumpers are not recommended for use on chapped or damaged lips.
