Highlighter: What it is, types and application rules

Sophia Müller 3 min read

What is a highlighter?

Highlighter — is a cosmetic product containing light-reflecting particles (mica, mother-of-pearl or synthetic pigments), designed to brighten and highlight certain areas of the face.

Dry and liquid highlighter textures with light-reflecting particles

The product's primary function, answering the question "what is a highlighter?", is not to conceal skin imperfections, but to attract light rays. This creates the illusion of fresh, rested, and radiant skin.

In makeup, the product is used for sculpting using the strobing technique. It allows you to visually correct facial contours and add volume through the natural play of light and shadow.

Main types

Dry highlighter comes in powder or baked formats. The most popular option is applied with a fluffy brush and produces effects ranging from a subtle glow to an intense metallic sheen. The dry texture is ideal for combination and oily skin.

Highlighter comes in various formats: cream stick, liquid bottle, and compact powder.

This liquid product, available in dropper or pump bottles, blends seamlessly with foundation, creating a dewy effect. It can be mixed with primer or day cream. This format is recommended for dry to normal skin.

Creamy highlighter comes in stick or jar form. It's easy to apply with your fingertips, making it ideal for spot-highlighting and touching up your makeup throughout the day.

The color palette is selected to match your skin tone. Pearl-silver shades are suitable for fair skin, champagne and gold for warm undertones, and bronze and copper shades are suitable for dark and tanned skin.

How to use

The classic application pattern focuses on several key areas. Applying product to the high cheekbones visually lifts the face, while applying it to the bridge and tip of the nose narrows and shortens it. Applying it in a dot above the upper lip adds volume, while highlights in the inner corners of the eyes and under the brow bone open up the eyes.

The application technique depends on the product's texture. Dry products are applied over a powdered face. Liquid and creamy options are spread over a damp skin before applying powder, which helps prevent makeup from creasing.

Business makeup with a delicate glow on the cheekbones, tip of the nose and the tick above the lip

Business makeup has its own specific product usage guidelines. For professional environments, choose finely dispersed highlighters without large sparkles or glitter. Apply the product sparingly, creating a healthy, pampering effect rather than an intense evening glow.
