Historically, this accessory appeared in Venice in the 16th century. Initially, muffs were made of silk, velvet, and rare fur, becoming a status symbol in both women's and men's wardrobes. In modern times, the muff serves as an accent piece, replacing or complementing classic gloves and mittens.

Main types

Contemporary designers produce muffs in a variety of stylistic and functional variations, adapting the historical item to everyday needs.

  • Classic fur muffs. They are made of natural or faux fur and are often complemented by a cord, satin ribbon, or chain for wearing around the neck, allowing hands-free access when needed.
  • Muff-bag. A hybrid accessory featuring a handhole and a hidden zippered pocket. This compartment can accommodate basic items: a smartphone, keys, and a cardholder.
  • Sports and casual models. They are sewn from waterproof quilted raincoat fabric with synthetic insulation (synthetic padding, holofiber) or knitted from bulky wool yarn.
  • Muffs for strollers. A practical, modern adaptation of the accessory. The design attaches directly to the handle of a stroller or sled with snaps or Velcro, protecting hands during walks.

What to combine with

The choice of muff depends on the style of your outerwear and the overall mood of your outfit. Classic fur models complement fitted wool coats, capes, and elegant shearling jackets. This combination creates a silhouette with a slightly retro feel.

Padded and quilted nylon muffs integrate into casual and sporty styles. They pair with oversized down jackets, parkas, and straight-cut winter coats. Knitted styles look great paired with textured chunky-knit cardigans or textile robe coats.

For evening outings outdoors, compact muffs made of smooth fur, velour, or velvet are worn. When styling, the accessory can be matched to the outerwear to create a monochrome silhouette or serve as a bright, contrasting accent. The texture of the muff often mirrors the material of the hat or scarf.
