Millefleur print — is a textile pattern featuring a scattering of small, often detailed flowers on a plain background. The term comes from the French word "mille-fleurs," which literally translates as "thousand flowers."
The technique originally appeared in France in the 15th century for the creation of tapestries. The background of woven paintings was densely filled with small floral motifs, and centuries later, this decorative technique was adopted by the textile industry. Visually, this pattern creates a romantic and slightly vintage mood, strongly associated with the Provençal style and cottagecore aesthetics.
Distinctive features
The main characteristic of the pattern is the miniature size of the buds and inflorescences. From a distance, this design can merge into a single textured surface. The flowers are densely and often randomly arranged on the fabric, without a pronounced geometric repetition (rapport).
The classic millefleur print features multicolored buds with green leaves against a contrasting background. Designers use both light and dark bases, and also create monochrome versions of the print. The design is most often applied to lightweight, flowing materials such as fine cotton, chiffon, viscose, silk, and staple fiber.

When styling the millefleur pattern, contrasting textures plays a key role. Lightweight pieces with small floral prints look harmonious with rougher materials: denim, smooth leather, suede, and thick knits. This technique helps tone down the romanticism and avoid an overly childish look.
