What is cottagecore style?
Cottagecore style is an aesthetic trend in fashion that romanticizes simple country life, farm life, and unity with nature.

The movement originated on social media in the late 2010s. It gained widespread popularity in 2020 as a form of escapism and a desire for home comfort. The concept is based on nostalgia for traditional crafts, vintage wardrobe items, and comfortable clothing that allows for freedom of movement.
Distinctive features
The cottagecore aesthetic is built on the visual codes of pastoral life and the Victorian era. Key elements of the style include:
- Silhouettes: Voluminous puff sleeves, square necklines, sweetheart necklines, and corset bodices. Tiered midi and maxi skirts, as well as loose peasant dresses, dominate the wardrobe.
- Fabrics: Natural, breathable materials are used. The base materials are cotton, linen, muslin, chintz, and lightweight wool.
- Prints and palette: The dominant motif is a small floral pattern (millefleur) and classic Vichy check. The color palette draws on natural tones: sage, dusty pink, cream, light yellow, and earthy brown.
- Decor: The pieces are complemented by an abundance of ruffles, frills, lace trim, ribbons, and bows. Handcrafted elements, including satin stitch embroidery and knitted details, are actively used.

How to wear
For everyday looks, cottagecore elements are adapted to urban conditions, toning down the theatricality with the help of basic pieces.
A romantic blouse with puffed sleeves and a square neckline is paired with straight-leg blue jeans or tailored linen trousers. In cooler weather, layering is key: light, flowing floral dresses are paired with voluminous chunky-knit cardigans or chunky vests.

The childishness and over-the-top romanticism of the outfits are balanced by the footwear. For this, chunky lace-up boots, flat Mary Janes, clogs, or woven leather sandals are used.

The look is completed with accessories made from natural materials. Straw hats, woven basket bags, and textile hairbands fit seamlessly into the style. Vintage jewelry is favored, including medallions on long chains, cameos, and strands of baroque pearls.
