Macintosh: What is it, its history, and what to wear it with

What is a Macintosh?

Mac — is a waterproof raincoat made of rubberized fabric, designed to protect against rain and wind.

This outerwear item was named after the Scottish chemist Charles Mackintosh. In 1823, he patented a technology for creating a waterproof material by bonding two layers of heavy cotton with a liquid rubber solution. Initially, the fabric was stiff, but over time, the production technology was significantly improved.

The main difference between a macintosh and other classic raincoats is its absolute waterproofness. A trench coat or gabardine raincoat is only water-repellent and can get wet in a heavy downpour, whereas the rubberized fabric of a macintosh completely blocks out moisture.

Distinctive features

The traditional macintosh is distinguished by its distinctly minimalist cut. It features a straight or slightly flared A-line silhouette, devoid of decorative elements. Unlike the classic trench coat, it lacks epaulettes, yokes on the chest and back, and a belt.

An important functional element of the design is the hidden button closure. The buttons are concealed under an additional fabric placket, preventing rainwater from seeping in through the buttonholes.

To ensure complete waterproofness, all seams are taped on the inside with a special waterproof tape. The coat features a classic turn-down collar, often with an additional closure under the throat, and deep welt pockets with a flap to protect your hands from the wind.

What to combine with

Thanks to its minimalist design, the macintosh is considered a versatile element of the transitional wardrobe. Its straight and fairly loose cut allows it to seamlessly integrate into a formal business attire. The coat fits comfortably over a classic pantsuit or structured jacket without distorting the shoulder line.

Pair a mac with a casual look: a cashmere turtleneck and straight trousers

For a smart casual look, pair the mac with straight-leg jeans made of thick denim, cashmere turtlenecks, and classic shoes like leather loafers or Chelsea boots.

For casual looks in rainy weather, pair a raincoat with tall rubber boots, a chunky knit sweater, and cropped chinos. This creates a practical and layered ensemble.

Classic colorways include sand, navy, and khaki, which easily integrate into any basic outfit. Bright styles, such as traditional yellow or red raincoats in this style, are used as the main color accent in monochrome ensembles.
