Boho style: what it is, its distinctive features, and how to wear it

What is boho style?

Boho style Boho (short for bohemian) is a fashion movement that combines elements of bohemian aesthetics, hippie culture, ethnic motifs, and vintage. The style's core values are freedom of expression, comfort, and a rejection of strict boundaries, complex corsets, and rigid tailoring in favor of relaxed, layered styles.

The combination of textured linen, crochet lace and suede fringe is a characteristic feature of the boho style.

Historically, the term is associated with European nomads and freelance artists. The modern interpretation of the style emerged in the 1960s and 1970s thanks to the hippie subculture. In the 2000s, the trend evolved into "boho chic"—a more wearable version popularized by actresses and models of the time.

Distinctive features

Loose, flowing, and voluminous silhouettes are the foundation of boho style. A-line maxi dresses, wide-leg trousers, tiered skirts, and peasant blouses with puff sleeves predominate in wardrobes.

The looks are created primarily using natural textures: cotton, linen, suede, soft leather, and wool. Handcrafted elements or imitation ones, such as lace, macramé, and crochet, are often featured. The color palette is built on natural, earthy tones. Terracotta, olive, mustard, sand, and brown are the base colors. These are combined with ethnic patterns, paisley, and floral prints.

Decor plays a key role in shaping the boho aesthetic. Clothing and accessories are liberally adorned with fringe, embroidery, tassels, flounces, ruffles, and patchwork details.

How to wear

A modern approach to style involves a balanced use of distinctive elements. Stylists recommend pairing one or two boho-inspired pieces with a basic wardrobe. For example, a voluminous blouse with ethnic embroidery looks harmonious with classic straight-leg jeans.

Layering is an important technique. Chunky knit cardigans, suede vests, or silk kimonos are worn over simple tops and dresses. This adds texture and visual complexity to the look.

The accessory group includes wide-brimmed felt or straw hats, soft hobo bags, and cowboy-style shoes such as Cossack boots or suede ankle boots. Jewelry is typically chunky and multi-tiered, made of silver, brass, and natural stones (turquoise, agate, amber).

A classic example of a casual boho look is a flowy floral maxi dress paired with a fringed suede jacket. A wide leather belt with a metal buckle and Chelsea boots complete the look.
