As a distinct style, coquettecore emerged on social media in the early 2020s. Its development was influenced by the stage personas of singer Lana Del Rey, the visual aesthetics of Regency-era historical dramas, and cinematic interpretations of Marie Antoinette's wardrobe.
The style is based on a reimagining of traditional feminine attributes without sexualizing them. The primary focus is on visual lightness, a nod to vintage silhouettes, and the romanticization of everyday wardrobe.
