What is a leather jacket?

Leather jacket — This is a short jacket with a nipped waist and a distinctive diagonal zipper. Traditionally, this style is made of thick leather, but modern variations allow for the use of a variety of materials.

The biker jacket was originally created in 1928 by Irving Shott. The designer developed the Perfecto model specifically for motorcyclists. The diagonal, overlapping zipper provided reliable protection for the biker's chest from the wind.

Over time, the jacket evolved from specialized motorcycle gear into a symbol of subcultures. Marlon Brando, rock musicians, and the punk movement contributed to its popularization. Today, the biker jacket has become a staple of the modern everyday wardrobe.

Distinctive features

The jacket's main visual feature is its asymmetrical closure. A massive metal zipper typically runs diagonally from the left hip to the right shoulder.

The biker jacket collar is a wide, turn-down collar with lapels. The corners of the collar are often secured with special metal snaps to prevent them from opening when moving.

The jacket's design incorporates a number of functional details. A belt with a buckle adjusts the fit along the hem. Epaulettes (shoulder straps) are located on the shoulders, and zippers are sewn into the sleeve cuffs, allowing for adjustment of the armhole width.

The classic biker jacket is made from thick cowhide. Modern interpretations are made from soft sheepskin, suede, faux leather, as well as heavy cotton or denim.

What to combine with

For a casual wardrobe, pair a biker jacket with straight-leg or wide-leg jeans and a basic white T-shirt. Complete the look with chunky lace-up boots or minimalist leather sneakers.

A stylistic approach that plays on contrasts involves pairing a rugged jacket with light, feminine textures. The biker jacket is worn over silk slip dresses, chiffon midi skirts, or floral print dresses.

Simple styles without excessive metal hardware integrate into smart-casual style. They're worn over tailored cotton shirts or thin cashmere turtlenecks, paired with palazzo pants and pencil skirts.

The biker jacket also serves as a layering element. In cold weather, it's worn under a voluminous classic coat or a straight trench coat. An alternative option is to layer the jacket over a thick cotton hoodie.
