What is a bomber jacket?
Bomber — This is a short jacket with a zipper, the distinctive feature of which is the elastic knitted cuffs on the sleeves, at the bottom of the garment and on the collar.

Historically, this garment originated from military gear. The MA-1 model was developed for US Air Force pilots in the mid-20th century. The original flight jacket was made of heavy nylon and had a bright orange lining, which served as a signal for rescue operations in the event of an emergency landing. A distinctive zippered utility pocket was located on the left sleeve.
Over time, the bomber jacket transitioned from military uniform to an attribute of youth subcultures of the 1970s and 1980s. Later, the jacket became a staple of everyday wardrobes and a regular feature in high fashion collections.
Main types
Modern design offers several variations of this jacket, which differ in materials and cut:
- Classic (nylon): This jacket replicates the original MA-1 design. It features a relaxed fit, a water-repellent outer shell, and the obligatory patch pocket on the sleeve.
- Varsity jacket: A hybrid of a bomber jacket and a sport coat. Made from thick wool with contrasting leather sleeves, it fastens with snaps, and is finished with striped elastic and large logo patches.
- Leather or suede: A premium version with a minimalist cut. It features a lack of unnecessary details, fittings, and sleeve pockets.
- Oversized: Trendy styles with exaggerated volume. They feature dropped shoulders and elongated sleeves, typical of streetwear aesthetics.

What to combine with
Thanks to the versatility of the cut, the jacket easily integrates into various stylistic directions.
For everyday looks, pair an oversized nylon bomber jacket with straight-leg jeans, a basic white T-shirt, or a chunky hoodie. Chunky sneakers or chunky lace-up boots complete the look.
To create contrasting ensembles, the jacket's rugged, masculine cut is paired with decidedly feminine pieces. The bomber jacket is worn over a flowing silk slip dress, a pleated skirt, or a fitted midi knit dress.

For smart casual, a simple suede or smooth leather bomber jacket replaces a classic jacket. It's worn over a thin cashmere turtleneck, paired with pleated trousers and leather loafers.
In cold weather, the jacket can be used as a midlayer in layered outfits. A thin bomber jacket can be worn under a loose, classic, straight-cut coat or trench coat.
