What is Vichy check?

Vichy check (also known as gingham) is a two-color geometric pattern made up of equal-sized squares.

Traditionally, this pattern is not printed on fabric, but created by weaving twill or plain weaves of dyed and undyed (white) threads. The name comes from the French city of Vichy, where mass production of cotton fabrics with this pattern began in the mid-19th century.

The pattern gained worldwide popularity in haute couture in 1959. That's when Brigitte Bardot married in a pink and white Vichy check dress, making the pattern a recognizable symbol of French style.

Distinctive features

The main feature of the pattern is its strict symmetry and the presence of halftones. The ornament forms three types of squares: pure white, richly colored, and mixed, creating a halftone where the colored and white threads intersect.

Thanks to the interweaving technology, genuine Vichy fabric has no reverse side. The pattern remains absolutely identical on both sides of the material.

The base color in this design is always white. It's most often combined with red, blue, black, or pink.

Cell size varies from microscopic (pepitas) to large, reaching several centimeters. The classic cell size is a small square with sides ranging from 2 to 5 millimeters.

What to combine with

For a casual summer wardrobe, a blue and white Vichy check shirt pairs harmoniously with straight-leg blue jeans. Loose white linen trousers also make a striking pair.

To create a French Riviera-inspired look, opt for A-line dresses or midi skirts in red and white checkered patterns. They're paired with neutral tops, woven straw bags, and wedge espadrilles.

Business attire features blouses or structured jackets in a black and white micro-check. They are paired with tailored black pleated trousers or a classic pencil skirt.

Vichy is a vibrant pattern that draws the eye. It's recommended to use it as the sole pattern in an outfit, complemented by solid-color pieces that echo one of the checkered patterns.
