What is a cape?
Cape A sleeveless, loose-fitting outerwear garment that's draped over the shoulders and fastened at the neck. The garment's main design feature is special arm slits instead of traditional set-in sleeves.

Unlike a poncho, which is pulled over the head and is a solid rectangle or circle, a cape has tailored shoulders and a mandatory front closure. Historically, capes were an element of Victorian wardrobe and military uniforms. They entered high women's fashion in the mid-20th century thanks to the experiments with shape and silhouette by designers Cristóbal Balenciaga and Pierre Cardin.
Main types
Modern brands produce several variations of this outerwear, adapted to different seasons and dress codes:
- Cape coat. Made from dense coat fabrics such as wool, cashmere, or tweed, it features a stiff shoulder and a turn-down collar, making it a complete mid-season outerwear piece.
- Cape jacket. A cropped version that mimics a tailored single- or double-breasted jacket with sleeves slit along the inseam. Suitable for both business and smart-casual wardrobes.

- Evening cape. A long cape made of flowing or textured fabrics such as silk, velvet, chiffon, or satin. It is often floor-length and worn over evening dresses for special occasions.
- Knitted cape. A soft, everyday variation made from a chunky yarn. Reminiscent of a voluminous cardigan with armholes, it's perfect for layering.

What to combine with
Due to the voluminous top, the cape requires a narrow or straight bottom to create harmonious proportions. It pairs well with tapered trousers, skinny jeans, and straight pencil skirts.
Under the cape, wear a fitted or semi-fitted top with long sleeves that will be visible through the slit. Thick turtlenecks, thin merino jumpers, and tailored shirts are ideal. In cold weather, a classic complement to a demi-season cape coat is tall, opera-length leather gloves that cover the exposed part of the arm up to the elbow.

Due to the cape's cut, it's impossible to wear it with long shoulder or crossbody bags. To complete the look, consider clutches, tote bags with short handles, or sturdy satchels that are comfortable to carry.
