What are cuffs?
Cuffs (from English cuff — cuff, cuff) — these are ear decorations that are fixed on the auricle without the need to pierce the lobe or cartilage.

The main technical feature is the fastening method. The piece is held in place by an open-loop clasp or a special loop that goes behind the ear. This design evenly distributes the weight of the jewelry, allowing you to wear chunky pieces without pulling on your earlobe.
Historically, similar forms were found in ancient culture, traditional Indian attire, and Siberian folk costumes. They entered modern fashion in the mid-20th century and experienced a major renaissance in the 2010s.
Main types
There are several basic designs of cuffs, differing in size and method of fastening:
- Minimalistic clips (rings): Small jewelry that attaches to the middle or upper part of the ear cartilage (helix). They often mimic classic piercings.
- Behind-the-ear cuffs: Large, statement pieces that wrap around the entire ear using a stiff wire frame. The designs often include large crystals, feathers, or floral motifs.
- Cuffs with chain: A hybrid design that requires a single standard piercing in the lobe. The design consists of a stud and a cartilage clip, connected by one or more thin chains.
- Ear cuffs: Complex sculptural forms covering most of the auricle. Often stylized as wings, tree branches, or elven ears.

How to wear
Large statement ear cuffs are traditionally worn asymmetrically, on only one ear. In this case, the cuff becomes the main accent of the look, while the other ear is left free or accessorized with a discreet stud.

Thin, minimalist hoop ear cuffs are used to create ear stacking. They are stacked several at a time on a single ear, paired with basic hoops or classic ear piercings.
To make jewelry stand out, keep hair away from the face. Sleek buns, high ponytails, slicked-back wet-look hair, and short asymmetrical cuts like pixie cuts work well.
Subtle metal clips are appropriate for everyday and smart-casual business attire. Chunky crystal-embellished pieces complement evening dresses or minimalist tuxedo pantsuits.
