Baking in makeup — This A technique for densely fixing creamy textures by applying a thick layer of loose powder, which is left on the skin for several minutes.
The term "baking" derives from the English word "baking." Under the influence of the skin's natural warmth, powder literally "melts" with concealer and foundation, forming a monolithic coating. This technique originated in drag queen makeup to create the most lasting stage look. It was introduced to the mainstream beauty industry by Hollywood makeup artists in the 2010s.
Distinctive features of the technique
Only loose, finely milled, transparent or lightly pigmented powders are used for baking. Pressed, compact products are not suitable for this purpose, as they are unable to create the required dense layer.
This technique creates a Photoshopped effect on skin. It completely conceals pores, mattifies, and brightens specific areas of the face: the under-eye area, the center of the forehead, the bridge of the nose, the chin, and the line under cheekbones.
Baking ensures extreme wear, preventing concealer from creasing into fine lines and wrinkles throughout the day. Due to the dense coverage it provides, this heavy makeup technique is more often used for evening outings, photo shoots, and video shoots than for everyday use.
How to use
The process begins with careful skin preparation. The under-eye area should be moisturized with a rich cream to prevent dryness and accentuate flaking.
Apply liquid concealer to the desired areas and blend with a damp sponge until even coverage is achieved. Then, using the same damp sponge or triangular puff, pick up a generous amount of loose powder. Apply it over the concealer using firm, patting motions.
A thick layer of powder is left on the face for 5-10 minutes to "bake." During this time, makeup artists typically apply eye makeup, as the layer of powder provides additional protection against dark eyeshadow flaking.
At the final stage, excess powder is carefully brushed off with a large fluffy brush. This leaves a smooth, securely held matte finish on the skin.
