What is a silhouette balloon?
Balloon — is a voluminous, rounded cut of clothing that widens in the central part and narrows towards the bottom, visually resembling an inflated balloon.
A balloon jacket is a type of outerwear with dropped shoulders, a wide body, and a cinched hem. The hem is often secured with a hidden elastic or drawstring, allowing for adjustable fit around the hips.

This silhouette was first introduced by designer Cristóbal Balenciaga in the 1950s. Initially, the shape was used to create evening dresses and skirts with rolled hems. In the 1980s, the silhouette was actively adapted for outerwear, becoming a popular base for windbreakers and winter down jackets.
Distinctive features
The main feature of the cut is its specific volume distribution. The garment expands most at the waist or hips, while the shoulder area and hem remain narrower.

The hem is constructed to create a distinctive "bubble." The bottom edge of the fabric is folded inward and sewn to the lining, or cinched tightly with a drawstring or elastic band.
To create and maintain a rounded shape, shape-stabilizing materials are used. These include nylon, raincoat fabric, heavy cotton, and taffeta. Winter jackets feature quilted fabrics, which further accentuate the puffy effect and maintain the desired structure.
What to combine with
When styling the balloon silhouette, the principle of volume contrast applies. Since a jacket or skirt cut in this style creates hypervolume, the rest of the look should be fitted or straight. Skinny jeans, cigarette pants, or a tailored pencil skirt are ideal choices.

The chunky top is harmoniously balanced by statement footwear. To maintain proportions, choose thick-soled models, chunky lace-up boots, platform Chelsea boots, or tube boots.

Layer under a voluminous jacket with a base layer of loosely textured pieces. Thin turtlenecks, basic long sleeves, and smooth-knit jumpers help avoid the appearance of excessive layering and maintain comfort.
