What is an outlet?

Outlet (from the English outlet) is a retail format specializing in the sale of clothing, footwear, and accessories from famous brands at significant discounts, usually ranging from 30% to 70%.

The key difference between outlet stores and seasonal sales at regular boutiques is that discounted prices are available year-round. The selection at these stores is primarily made up of unsold remnants from previous collections.

The format originated in the United States in the 1930s as factory stores. Initially, manufacturers used them to sell surplus or slightly defective products directly to customers, eliminating distributor markups.

Main types

Modern discount centers are divided into several main formats depending on their scale and the specifics of their product range.

  • Outlet village — large open-air shopping malls, styled like small towns, housing dozens of premium and luxury boutiques.
  • Single-brand outlet (factory outlet) — a store for a single brand, where leftovers from the brand's main boutiques are brought in. Often located at a factory or in a separate shopping center.
  • Online outlet — digital platforms that aggregate discount offers from past seasons from a variety of brands and multi-brand stores.

Specialty lines deserve special attention. Some brands create collections exclusively for sale in outlet stores. These items retain the signature cut, but are often made from simpler fabrics or with simpler hardware than their main line.

How to use

Outlets are ideal for purchasing timeless wardrobe essentials. Classic trench coats, cashmere sweaters, tailored suits, and high-quality leather shoes remain relevant as seasons and microtrends change.

When choosing luxury brand items, it's recommended to pay attention to article numbers and internal tags to distinguish genuine items from runway collections from lines created specifically for discount centers.

Investing in high-end accessories at outlet stores allows you to integrate premium pieces into your everyday wardrobe without overpaying for a new collection. Rigid bags, silk scarves, and classic belts remain popular for years and easily integrate into basic looks.
