What is a sweatshirt?

sweatshirt (from English sweater - a sweater and shirt - shirt) is a type of lightweight, loose-fitting sweater made of thick knitwear.

Historically, the sweatshirt originated in the 1920s thanks to Benjamin Russell. He created a cotton sweater for his football-playing son as a replacement for the itchy and uncomfortable wool sweaters.

Initially, this garment was used exclusively as athletic wear. In the 1960s, it became part of the everyday preppy student style and later became a staple of wardrobe.

Distinctive features

The sweatshirt's main feature is its crew neck and collarless design. Unlike hoodies and sweatshirts, the classic model has no hood, pockets (including kangaroo pockets), fasteners, or zippers.

A characteristic detail of traditional garments is the V-shaped elastic insert under the collar. Originally, it served to absorb sweat and prevent the neck from stretching during workouts, but now often serves a decorative purpose.

To maintain shape and warmth, the sleeves feature elastic cuffs, and a wide ribbed hem. The traditional material used is thick cotton jersey (fleece). Its backing can be looped (French terry) or softly brushed with fleece.

What to combine with

For everyday wear, pair a classic grey or black sweatshirt with straight jeans, joggers and sneakers.

Smart casual style: a sweatshirt over a white shirt paired with a black midi skirt

Smart casual style plays with contrasting textures. Wear a sweatshirt over a white button-down shirt, paired with classic pleated trousers or a silk midi slip skirt.

The sweatshirt's lack of a hood makes it ideal for layering. It fits comfortably under a voluminous cotton trench coat, a straight-cut wool coat, or a structured oversized jacket. Monochromatic ensembles, where the sweatshirt is paired with sweatpants of the same material and color, are also popular.
