Refill — is a replaceable unit, spare cartridge, or package designed to fill a reusable original case or bottle. The term is derived from the English word refill (refill).
The main function of a refill is to preserve expensive outer packaging, such as a metal tube, leather case, or heavy glass bottle. When the product is used up, only its contents are replaced.
The refill format is the industry's response to the sustainability trend. Using refills reduces plastic and glass waste and lowers the carbon footprint of production. This allows you to invest in a single premium accessory, such as a luxury lipstick or a leather journal, and keep it in use for years.
Main types
In perfumery, refills are glass or plastic containers, often equipped with a special dispenser. They are used to transfer fragrances into the main designer bottle, a practice widely used by brands from Mugler to Chanel and Dior.
Magnetic eyeshadow and blush refills for palettes are common in decorative cosmetics. Lipstick refills are also available, which snap into heavy metal or leather cases with a distinctive click.
Among high-status accessories, refills are replacement paper pads for premium leather organizers such as Filofax or Louis Vuitton, as well as refills for expensive fountain and ballpoint pens.
For wardrobe care, use soft eco-friendly pouches (doy-packs) containing detergents for delicate fabrics or cashmere. The contents of these pouches are poured into reusable glass or ceramic dispensers.
How to use
Purchasing a refill costs on average 20-40% less than the full-size product. Buyers pay only for the product itself, eliminating the cost of complex, designer packaging.
The replacement mechanism depends on the product type. In cosmetics, refills are secured with hidden magnets or mechanical latches. Perfume uses micro-funnels or automatic overflow (anti-spill) systems that block the flow of liquid while filling the bottle, preventing spills.
Using empty magnetic palettes and individual refills allows for customization. This allows you to create a personalized makeup palette for your specific skin type, eliminating the need to purchase pre-made sets containing unused shades.
