What is a cushion?
Cushion A cushion (from the English word "pillow") is a cosmetic packaging format consisting of a porous sponge soaked in a liquid product. It's not a separate type of cosmetic, but rather a form of presentation. Foundation, blush, bronzer, highlighter, and lip products are available in this format.
The format was developed in South Korea in 2008 as a hybrid of skincare and makeup, combining the properties of foundation, BB cream, and powder. It comes in a compact case, visually reminiscent of a powder compact. Inside, there's a mirror, a special sponge applicator, and a plastic divider that reliably protects the soaked sponge from drying out and exposure to air.
Distinctive features
The cushion's key feature is its dosing system. The porous sponge loosens the cream's texture when pressed, transforming it into a weightless emulsion. This delivery system eliminates the mask-like effect on the face and allows for the product to be applied in a thin, even layer.
Cushion formulas traditionally contain 30-40% moisturizing ingredients. These include hyaluronic acid, plant extracts, and thermal water. Most foundations in this format contain high SPF filters (from 30 to 50+), which protect the skin from photoaging.
The cushion comes with a smooth, fine-pored polyurethane sponge. The applicator doesn't absorb product, releasing it completely into the skin. When the product runs out, the inner sponge (refill) is easily replaced with a new one, eliminating the need to purchase an entire case.
How to use
The product is applied by lightly pressing the applicator onto the sponge. Then, apply the product to the face using gentle patting and stamping motions. Avoid smearing the product onto the skin, as you would with a traditional foundation, as this will disrupt the evenness of the coverage.
Its lightweight consistency allows for layering on problem areas. This helps conceal redness without weighing down your makeup. The compact format with a mirror makes it a convenient tool for quickly touching up your foundation throughout the day before a business meeting or event.
The sponge applicator requires regular cleaning at least once a week. To remove makeup residue, use a hydrophilic oil or special soap to prevent bacteria from growing on the surface of the material.
