Bob-caret: what kind of haircut is it, types and styling methods

Isabella García 3 min read

What is a bob cut?

bob-caret — This is a hybrid women's haircut that combines the voluminous, shortened nape of a classic bob with the clean, defined cut near the face characteristic of a bob. The main distinguishing feature of this style is a smooth or contrasting transition from short strands at the back to longer strands at the front.

Боб-каре - 1
A classic bob-cut profile with characteristic volume at the back and lengthening towards the face.

The haircut completely opens the neckline at the back, accentuating the cheekbones and chin. Historically, this silhouette emerged in the 1920s as a symbol of female emancipation. The haircut acquired its modern, geometric and precise shape in the 1960s, thanks to the techniques of British hairdresser Vidal Sassoon.

Main types

The shape adapts to different hair types and facial proportions by changing the length and cutting technique.

  • Classic bob: symmetrical shape with an even cut at the face (usually up to the chin line) and moderate volume at the back of the head.
  • Long bob or Lob: The front strands reach the collarbones or shoulders, the transition from the back of the head is less sharp.
  • Asymmetrical: The strands on one side of the face are noticeably longer than on the other, which creates a dynamic silhouette.
Боб-каре - 2
A sleek, symmetrical bob paired with a tailored oversized jacket.
  • Graduated: The haircut is done in layers (steps), which adds texture, visually increases the volume of fine hair and lightens thick hair.
  • With bangs: The shape is complemented by straight, side-swept or textured curtain bangs that alter the proportions of the face.

How to wear and style

The way a bob is styled determines the overall mood of the look. A sleek, glass-haired style with straightened strands emphasizes the cut's clean lines and glossy shine. Textured waves created with salt spray and a curling iron transform the cut into a relaxed, casual style.

Боб-каре - 3
An asymmetrical bob cut with light, textured waves.

In a wardrobe context, a cropped back looks harmonious with high collars, turtlenecks, and turtleneck sweaters. Longer front strands complement V-necks and the tailored lapels of classic jackets.

Боб-каре - 4
The short haircut reveals the neck, allowing you to wear voluminous sweaters and large earrings.

The exposed neck and earlobes make the bob the perfect base for statement accessories. The cut allows for large hoop earrings, long pendants, and close-fitting chokers that stay out of the way and out of sight.
