What is mermaidcore?

Mermaidcore (Мермейдкор) - 1
Sequined fabric that imitates fish scales is one of the main markers of the mermaidcore aesthetic.

Mermaidcore style gained mass popularity in the early 2020s. Its development was driven by haute couture collections from brands like Blumarine and Versace, as well as the influence of cinema and social media. This style is based on escapism and the visual romanticization of nautical themes.

The trend is comprehensive and extends beyond clothing. It extends to statement accessories, specific makeup for a radiant complexion, and hairstyles that mimic wet hair.

Distinctive features

Materials with a pronounced wet sheen play a key role in the aesthetics. Designers use sequins reminiscent of fish scales, flowing silk, smooth satin, and fabrics with added lurex. Translucent, lightweight textures such as organza and mesh are also in demand.

The color palette for this style is built strictly around aquatic shades. The base colors are sea green, aquamarine, and deep blue. Additional accents include pearl white, soft lilac, peach, and coral.

The signature cut includes mermaid skirts and dresses that hug the hips and flare out at the bottom. These silhouettes often feature corsets, as well as complex asymmetrical draping and ruffles that visually echo the shape of sea waves. Natural and faux pearls, mother-of-pearl, rhinestones, and metal elements resembling shells and starfish are often used for embellishment and accessories.

How to wear

In evening wear, the mermaidcore style is expressed through maxi dresses in satin or sequined fabric. The traditional mermaid silhouette in these looks is complemented by a layered pearl choker and a sleek, wet-look hairstyle.

For a casual take on this trend, simply incorporate a few nautical elements into your outfit. A seafoam-colored silk slip skirt can be paired with a basic white ribbed top or an oversized neutral sweater.

Accent accessories help maintain a stylish look without radically changing your wardrobe. Shell-shaped bags, natural mother-of-pearl hairpins, or irregular baroque pearl necklaces easily incorporate into everyday outfits.

The beauty component of this trend includes makeup using the "glass skin" technique. A dewy, transparent gloss on the lips and eyelids complements the overall nautical theme without overpowering the look.
