Hair lamination: what it is, types and care instructions

Camille Durand 2 min read

What is hair lamination?

Hair lamination — is a cosmetic treatment that involves applying a special compound to strands of hair, creating a thin, breathable microfilm on the surface of each hair. The main goal of this treatment is to seal the cuticle, smooth the scales, and give the hair a pronounced, mirror-like shine and smoothness.

To break down the technical aspects of hair lamination, it involves physically enveloping the hair with a protective layer without altering its internal structure or disulfide bonds. This film protects the hair from mechanical damage, heat, temperature fluctuations, and moisture loss. The visual effect includes a 10-15% increase in hair volume due to the thickening of each hair strand and the complete elimination of frizz.

Main types

Classic (transparent) lamination uses a colorless compound solely to add shine, smoothness, and protection. Colored, or ionic, lamination contains pigment that simultaneously tones the hair or neutralizes unwanted tones (such as yellowness in blondes) by sealing the color inside.

Biolamination is performed using formulations based on natural cellulose and dandelion or zucchini juice extracts, which are considered gentler and hypoallergenic. Phytolamination is additionally enriched with plant extracts, vitamins, and silk proteins for surface hydration.

The main difference between this procedure and keratin straightening is that lamination doesn't straighten tight curls. It merely makes them more defined, shiny, and frizz-free.

How to care

To preserve the protective film, use only sulfate-free shampoos with a mild cleansing base. Deep-cleansing shampoos, scrubs, and scalp peels quickly wash away the laminating agent, so their use is completely avoided. It is recommended to wash your hair with warm or cool water, avoiding excessively hot water, which can destroy the protective film.

It's also important to avoid using natural oils and alcohol-containing styling products. Oils dissolve the microfilm, and the alcohol in hairsprays dries out the coating. With proper care, the results last 3 to 6 weeks, gradually fading from the hair surface.
