What is a silhouette cocoon?
Cocoon — is an architectural garment characterized by a voluminous, rounded midsection and a tapered hem. In fashion terms, the cocoon silhouette is a term describing a cut that visually resembles the natural shape of a cocoon.
Cristóbal Balenciaga is considered the creator of this cut. In 1957, the designer introduced the legendary cocoon coat. This style challenged the then-popular fitted New Look silhouette pioneered by Christian Dior.
The shape's distinctive feature is its concealment of the body's natural curves. The emphasis shifts from the waistline to the smooth, sculpted lines of the garment itself.
Distinctive features
The silhouette is built on several basic cut elements. The key detail of the top is the dropped shoulder line. It creates a soft, sloping contour without harsh angles.
- O-shape. The maximum expansion of the cut occurs in the waist and hip area with a complete absence of darts or a belt.
- Tapered hem. The noticeable narrowing of the garment towards the bottom gathers volume, thanks to which the garment retains its geometry and does not look shapeless.
To maintain the cocoon's architectural proportions, shape-holding materials are used. Manufacturers use dense wool, tweed, cashmere, neoprene, or stiff cotton. Soft and flowing fabrics are unable to maintain the intended rounded shape.
What to combine with
The main rule for styling a cocoon is maintaining a balanced proportion. A voluminous, architectural top requires a laconic and narrow bottom.
Coats or cardigans of this cut pair well with straight-leg jeans, cigarette pants, leggings, and pencil skirts. Cocoon dresses are worn with thick tights and minimalist footwear. Suitable options include ankle boots with a sturdy heel, loafers, or tall tube boots.
It's not recommended to pair a cocoon with flared trousers, such as palazzos or culottes. Full A-line skirts also disrupt the geometric shape of the look. Such combinations add weight to the lower half of the figure and undermine the original design of the garment.
