Indie Sleaze — is a fashion aesthetic that emerged between 2006 and 2012, combining elements of grunge, 80s club culture, and the indie rock style of the era.
The term literally translates as "indie sleaze." It describes a deliberately careless, rebellious look associated with parties, amateur flash photography, and the early Tumblr era. Historically, the indie sleaze style was influenced by pop culture icons such as Kate Moss, Pete Doherty, Alexa Chung, and the Olsen sisters. American Apparel's advertising campaigns played a significant role in popularizing the style.
The main philosophy of the movement is to reject polished glamour in favor of eclecticism. This aesthetic blends everyday essentials with vintage finds and theatrical accents.
Distinctive features
A characteristic feature of this style is deliberate casualness. In makeup, this manifests itself in a "yesterday's" look with smudged black eyeliner, and in hairstyles, in tousled hair. Clothing often appears slightly worn or stretched.
Contrasting textures play a key role. Affordable, thin knits, such as basic tank tops and deep V-neck tees, are combined with accent materials: lurex, sequins, genuine leather, and voluminous faux fur.
Key wardrobe staples include skinny jeans, ripped nylon tights, pleated tennis miniskirts, and vintage rock band T-shirts. These looks are often complemented with oversized chunky knit cardigans. Footwear choices include chunky leather lace-up boots, distressed Converse sneakers, hidden platform shoes, or chunky loafers.
