Breeches: What they are, the history of the style, and what to wear them with

What are breeches?

breeches — a style of trousers characterized by a strong flare at the hips and a tight fit from the knee to the ankle. This recognizable silhouette provides a clear answer to the question: what are jodhpurs in the context of clothing design?

The cut of the breeches: high rise, pleats at the waist and characteristic flare at the hips.

The term originates from the French cavalry general Gaston Auguste Gallifet, who introduced this cut in the late 19th century. Historically, the style was developed as part of the cavalry uniform. Wide hips provided freedom of movement in the saddle and reduced fabric tension, while narrow calves allowed the trousers to be quickly and easily tucked into tall cavalry boots.

Riding breeches became a staple in women's wardrobes in the 1980s, thanks to designer experiments with the uniform. They transformed from utilitarian military attire into an extravagant fashion statement, becoming popular for both casual and evening wear.

Distinctive features

The breeches' silhouette is built on a sharp contrast of volumes. The radical transition from the baggy top to the narrow bottom creates a complex architectural form.

Classic styles feature a high waist. To create the necessary volume on the hips, the waistline is often complemented with deep tucks, large pleats, or gathers at the waist.

Traditional trousers are made from dense, shape-retaining fabrics such as suiting gabardine, wool, heavy cotton, and denim. Modern interpretations may use flowing materials such as silk, viscose, or heavy knits. This creates a softer, smoother silhouette, free from the rigidity of military tailoring.

Trouser legs typically end at the ankle. To ensure a snug fit, the bottoms are often finished with wide cuffs, a long row of buttons, or integrated zippers down the calf.

What to combine with

Since breeches create a chunky bottom, the top should be simple and form-fitting to maintain a balanced proportion. Basic turtlenecks, fitted shirts, knit bodysuits, and crop tops do this perfectly.

For a classic jockey style, trousers are tucked into tall, straight-shafted, flat-soled boots. Classic pumps or high-heeled ankle boots are worn to visually elongate the silhouette and lengthen the legs.

Cropped jackets, such as biker jackets or bombers, as well as fitted blazers, are ideal outerwear for jodhpurs. It's important that the outerwear ends just above the widest part of the trousers to avoid distorting the figure's proportions.

Wide belts made of smooth, thick leather help accentuate the waist and further highlight the intricate cut of the garment.
