What are braids?

Braids (from English braid - braid) - these are tight braids that are woven close to the scalp, forming clear partings.

Historically, this technique goes back to African weaving traditions ( cornrows ). In their modern form, braids have become a global element of street fashion and the beauty industry.

The main distinguishing feature of modern braids is the frequent use of Kanekalon. These artificial strands are woven in to lengthen and thicken the braid, or to add a vibrant color without the need to dye your own hair.

Main types

Classic straight braids consist of two to six or more symmetrical braids. They are braided parallel to each other, starting from the hairline on the forehead and extending toward the back of the head.

Ponytail braids vary in the direction they are braided. The braids are drawn toward the crown, where they are gathered into a high, sleek ponytail made of loose hair or synthetic material.

Patterned or geometric braids involve braiding with shaped partings. This technique allows you to create complex designs on your head, such as zigzags, waves, stars, or ornaments.

The "Sphinx" hairstyle is a combination style. It combines tight braids at the crown and loose, classic African braids at the nape.

How to wear

In sportswear and streetwear, braids complement relaxed silhouettes. The hairstyle pairs well with oversized hoodies, joggers, crop tops, bomber jackets, and chunky sneakers.

Festival fashion allows for braids with bright, neon, or metallic Kanekalon. These braids are worn with denim shorts, asymmetrical tops, and statement makeup.

Contrast braids with a casual wardrobe: an oversized jacket, a basic T-shirt and straight jeans.

Braids in natural shades that match your natural hair color create a stylish contrast in a casual wardrobe. They look great with minimalist clothing—oversized jackets, basic T-shirts, and straight-leg jeans.

Beyond its visual appeal, this hairstyle is also practical. Braids maintain a neat appearance for two to four weeks, require no daily styling, and are a convenient option for travel or active sports.
