Balletcore: What is this clothing style and how to wear it?

What is balletcore?

Balletcore (from English) balletcore ) is a fashion trend inspired by the rehearsal uniforms and stage costumes of ballet dancers. The trend gained widespread popularity after the Miu Miu Spring/Summer 2022 collection and the subsequent popularization of the aesthetic on social media.

Classic pointe shoes with satin ribbons and knitted leg warmers are recognizable elements of the balletcore aesthetic.

The core of this style is a combination of refined femininity, grace, and the comfort characteristic of professional dance attire. Balletcore style isn't simply a direct retelling of stage images, but a romanticization of dancers' daily routines, with an emphasis on comfortable layering that allows the body to move freely.

Distinctive features of the style

Key wardrobe elements in this aesthetic include classic ballet flats, street-ready pointe shoes, knitted leg warmers, and fitted bodysuits. Top layers include cropped cardigans and wrap tops, as well as full, layered tulle skirts.

The signature materials emphasize the contrast between softness and functionality: fine ribbed knits, smooth silk, satin, translucent mesh, and stretch spandex. The color palette is built on pastel shades—powder pink, soft blue, cream, and white—naturally complemented by light gray melange and stark black.

A traditional ballet-core look: a wrap cardigan, a bodysuit, and a full midi-length tulle skirt.

Details and accessories play a vital role in shaping the silhouette. Looks are completed with satin ribbons, ankle ties, large bows in hair and clothing, wide fabric headbands, and sheer tights, including opaque white and translucent pink options.

How to wear

To adapt the ballet dancer to everyday life, elements of dance gear are combined with basic clothing. This avoids theatrical costume effect and makes the look appropriate outside of dance class.

A dark interpretation of balletcore: a black bodysuit, translucent tights, leg warmers and a short wrap skirt.

The key stylistic element is contrasting textures. A lightweight, semi-sheer tutu skirt is paired with a chunky, chunky-knit sweater, a rugged leather jacket, or a tailored, oversized menswear jacket. For everyday wear, a fitted knit bodysuit is paired with wide-leg, full-length jeans. Ballet flats paired with oversized leg warmers complement short, pleated tennis skirts or straight-leg trousers.

A casual urban look with ballet-core elements: a wrap top paired with wide-leg jeans and pink ballet flats.

You can integrate the trend through small accents, too. Adding satin ribbons to your hair or pairing a basic wrap top with classic office pants allows you to maintain the aesthetic without radically changing your usual wardrobe.
