What is argyle print?

Argyll — is a geometric pattern consisting of diamonds or squares arranged in a checkerboard pattern, over which a grid of thin diagonal intersecting lines is superimposed.

A classic argyle knit featuring diamonds and fine intersecting lines.

The pattern originates from Scotland and is historically linked to the tartan of the Campbell clan in the Argyll region, which emerged in the 17th century. In the 1920s, Pringle of Scotland adapted the pattern for knitwear production.

The Duke of Windsor popularized the pattern in golf attire. The print subsequently became an integral part of classic preppy style.

Distinctive features of the pattern

The basic structure of the pattern consists of interconnected solid blocks of color in the shape of diamonds. Contrasting fine lines are embroidered or knitted over these blocks, creating a three-dimensional and layered effect.

The argyle print knit vest is a recognizable element of preppy style.

Argyle is traditionally created using intarsia knitting. Because of this technique, it's most often found on knitwear, including vests, jumpers, cardigans, and socks.

The classic color palette includes deep shades such as navy blue, burgundy, emerald, mustard, and gray. Accent diagonal lines are usually done in white or a bright contrasting color.

What to combine with

For a preppy, collegiate chic look, wear a knit argyle vest over a basic white shirt. Complete the look with a pleated skirt, chinos, or straight-leg trousers.

A modern take on the pattern: an oversized cardigan in pastel shades.

For smart-casual office wear, a V-neck argyle jumper serves as a midlayer under a solid-color blazer. Dark, unworn jeans or classic wool trousers are the perfect base layer.

A traditional argyle sweater can be paired with decidedly modern textures, such as sleek leather pants or chunky boots. This creates a play of contrasts and softens the pattern's formality.

Argyle socks add a touch of class to a classic men's look.

Argyle socks are a bold statement piece for both business and casual wear. Worn under classic trousers, they become visible when walking or sitting, adding a dynamic touch to your look.
