What is a down jacket?
Down jacket — this is a quilted jacket or coat, insulated with natural down (goose, duck) or modern synthetic analogues (thinsulate, holofiber, bio-down).

The down jacket's key design feature is the presence of quilting—stitched sections. This detail holds the insulation in place and prevents it from bunching up during wear or washing.
The outer layer of the garment is made of dense, wind- and water-resistant materials. Nylon, polyester, membrane fabrics, or cotton blends with a special water-repellent finish are most commonly used.
Historically, down jackets were created as specialized gear for mountaineers and polar explorers. The first patent for such a jacket was received by Eddie Bauer in the 1930s, but over time, it became a staple of everyday winter wardrobes.
Main types
Modern collections include several basic down jacket silhouettes, adapted to different temperature conditions and stylistic needs.
- Shortened (Cropped): Oversized jackets that hit the waist or hips. They're ideal for mild winters, driving, and creating bold, high-waisted silhouettes.
- Oversize: Models with exaggerated volume, often in a "cocoon" silhouette. The loose fit allows for thick, layered outfits to be worn underneath, including chunky knit sweaters or oversized hoodies.

- Down coat: Long, straight-cut or belted styles, reaching midi or maxi lengths. They provide maximum protection from the cold and visually elongate the silhouette.
- Thin down jackets (liners): Lightweight jackets with minimal insulation. They are worn as standalone outerwear in early autumn or as an additional insulating layer under a wool coat or trench coat in winter.
What to combine with
The style of a down jacket depends on its volume, length, and cut. This outerwear easily integrates into a variety of styles.

- Everyday casual: A voluminous mid-length down jacket is paired with straight jeans, chunky Chelsea boots with a tractor sole and a cashmere beanie.
- Sports style: A cropped jacket is worn over a thick hoodie and joggers. The look is completed with insulated winter sneakers and a backpack.
- Feminine silhouette: An elongated down coat with a belt is paired with a midi-length knit dress, thick tights and high leather tube boots.

- Layering: A thin collarless down jacket is worn as a midlayer under a classic double-breasted coat or a voluminous jacket. This allows you to integrate formal demi-season pieces into your winter wardrobe.
