The name "alcoholic tank top" is directly linked to Soviet pop culture. The term was established due to the stereotypical image of marginalized characters and alcoholic men, depicted in baggy white tank tops and tights. This image was actively replicated through satirical cartoons, cinema, and was popularized by the figure of the Wolf from the animated series "Well, Just You Wait!"
There is a term with a similar meaning in English. wife beater (literally "wife beater"). It is also historically associated with stereotypes about domestic violence and dysfunctional living conditions.
Over time, the garment's status has radically changed. Thanks to the influence of the catwalks and grunge culture of the 1990s, it has moved from the category of hidden underwear to the status of a universal unisex wardrobe staple.
