Nine out of ten of my new clients are terrified of wearing a denim shirt with jeans. "I'll look like a Texas Ranger" or "It looks too much like a work uniform"—that's what I hear at every other consultation. Most glossy articles recommend solving this problem by combining radically different shades of denim. As a practicing stylist, I offer a completely different, counterintuitive approach.

Ideal total denim look Today, it's built on strict monochrome (especially in deep raw indigo) and mathematically precise fabric weight matching. This technique transforms this everyday fabric into a fully-fledged replacement for an expensive business suit. We've already discussed the historical evolution of this material in more detail in our a complete guide to the main fashionable jeans and trends , but today we will talk exclusively about the applied styling of sets.
Total denim look – the new uniform for “quiet luxury”
Let's forget about denim as a material for trips to the dacha. The turning point occurred at the Bottega Veneta SS23 show, when Mathieu Blasi sent Kate Moss down the runway in "jeans" and a "flannel shirt" that were actually masterfully printed on the finest nubuck leather. This couture gesture officially cemented denim's status as intellectual luxury.

According to WGSN analytics agency data for 2024, demand for unwashed raw denim increased by 45% in the premium segment. Why? Because this stiff, shape-resistant fabric, free of fraying, rhinestones, and torn edges, works as a perfect body sculptor. It creates a silhouette as crisply as a fine wool suit.
"A high-quality raw denim suit for €150 will always look much more expensive and classier than a loose wool suit from a mass-market store for the same price."
Last season, I put together a capsule collection for a banking client who needed looks for Casual Friday. She found classic suits too boring, and regular jeans too relaxed. We solved the problem by purchasing an architectural suit in stiff dark blue denim from COS. Thanks to the dense structure of the fabric, the jacket held the shoulder line just as well as a Saint Laurent tuxedo.

Start for freeThe Myth of the "Canadian Tuxedo": Why the Old Rules No Longer Apply
Open any old style blog and you'll find the rule: "Always wear a light top and dark bottoms to keep things from blending." Forget it. It's the worst thing you can do to your proportions, because a sharp color line cuts your figure in half.

Monochrome denim is a powerful tool for creating a vertical color scheme. When the tone of the shirt and pants matches 100%, the eye moves from top to bottom without stopping. This visually adds height and reduces bulk.
That's why I always recommend buying co-ords from the same brand and the same fabric batch. Deliberately mixing different shades of blue (for example, a light blue vintage jacket and navy skinny jeans) often looks like you just threw on the first thing that came out of your closet. Of course, there is an exception: if you're consciously embracing a Y2K aesthetic, this technique is justified. But for a chic urban look, it's a disaster.

Weight Error: Why the Top and Bottom Don't Match in Texture
The most common mistake my clients make, which isn't visible in online store photos but can ruin their look in real life, is the difference in fabric weight. In the professional world, denim density is measured in ounces per square yard (oz).

A thin summer chambray shirt (around 6-8 oz) drapes softly and flows. If you tuck it into heavy, thick jeans (13-14 oz) that are too stiff, the textures will clash. The look will fall apart. A proper all-denim look requires balance: the jacket or shirt should have the same density and rigidity as the pants. If the bottom holds its shape, the top should too.
Formulas for a status-defining total denim look for every day
To avoid reinventing the wheel in front of an open cabinet, use three proven formulas that work flawlessly in a range from the office to the evening bar.

Formula 1: Office Siren
A dark denim midi skirt (with a slit in the back or front for a step) and a fitted denim shirt in the same color. Add horn-rimmed glasses and kitten heels. This look fits perfectly with trendy office siren style while maintaining a strict look. Important: the shirt should be buttoned almost to the neck.
Formula 2: Smart Casual
Straight-leg jeans + a structured jacket in the same denim. Note: not a classic trucker jacket, but a blazer-style jacket with notched lapels. Wear a crisp white cotton T-shirt underneath. It's the perfect look. a casual women's corpcore option for creative industries.

Formula 3: Relaxed Chic
Wide-leg jeans and an oversized denim shirt worn open over a smooth silk top. Here we play with the contrast of rugged fabric and delicate silk.
Let's be honest: stiff denim doesn't suit all body types. If you have a lot of volume in your upper body (full arms, a large chest), a 12-ounce denim shirt can make your silhouette look heavy and boxy. In this case, it's best to wear denim bottoms and swap the top for a smooth, matte viscose in the same shade of indigo.

Why does Bella Hadid's denim look like a street style masterpiece, yet you see a mechanic in the mirror? The secret lies in styling and clever placement of accents.

The open body area rule. Heavy denim is a visually heavy monolith. It needs to be broken up. Roll up your sleeves to expose your wrists. Unbutton the top two buttons to show off your collarbones. Choose jeans that slightly reveal the ankle if you're wearing loafers. Leather is your key contrasting accessory.
Contrasting textures. Never add a denim bag or shoes to a total denim look (denim shoes look cheap 99% of the time). Instead, use smooth leather, patent leather, or suede. Learn more about working with shaggy textures in the article about What to wear with suede to look expensive.
"My favorite styling trick: replace the basic plastic buttons on a mass-market denim shirt with high-quality metal or faux horn buttons. Investing €5-7 in hardware visually elevates the item from fast fashion to premium."
Be mindful of your metal hardware. If your jacket has copper buttons, avoid a shiny silver belt buckle. The clash of metals on such a textured fabric will immediately catch the eye.
Top 5 Items for the Perfect Denim All-Denim Look in 2024
When building my clients' wardrobes, I always consider the cost-per-wear (cost per wear). Investing €80-€120 in a quality denim item means you'll get something that will last for years. Here are five items worth considering:

- Structured denim jacket or blazer. The undisputed leader of the season, COS creates excellent minimalist silhouettes (range €90–€130).
- Wide-leg jeans with creases. A crease stitched down the front elongates the legs and gives the jeans a suit-like look. For the best heavyweight raw denim, check out the Massimo Dutti Studio line (around €80).
- Denim vest, suit cut. Worn as a top over bare skin, Zara releases excellent, trendy options every season for €30–€40.
- A-line maxi skirt with a slit. A perfect replacement for boring jeans. Requires a thick fabric, otherwise the hem will wrinkle unsightly when you walk.
- Straight cut shirt of masculine type. No unnecessary darts, patch pockets with flaps, or embroidery. The more minimalist, the better.

Start for freeStylist checklist: check your total denim look before you go out
Before you leave the house, stand in front of a mirror and check yourself using this short but strict checklist:
- Fittings: Do the metal colors on your top, bottoms, belt, and bag match? (Mixing jewelry is acceptable, but functional pieces should complement each other.)
- Shoes: Does it create the right contrast? Ditch the fabric sneakers for leather loafers, Cossack boots, or pointed ankle boots.
- Proportions: Is your waist clearly defined? If you're wearing a voluminous shirt with wide jeans, tuck at least one edge of the shirt into your waistband (a French tuck), otherwise your figure will look like a rectangle.
- Grooming: Is your hair neat enough? Stiff denim calls for a polished look, both in the face and hair. A messy bun paired with an all-over denim look will make the look appear unkempt. Slicked-back hair or a perfectly styled brush are just the ticket.
A total denim look isn't just about throwing on two blue pieces. It's about playing with density, cut, and hardware. Start with a deep indigo ensemble, choose a contrasting leather belt, add a touch of polish to your hairstyle—and you'll be surprised how elegant and luxurious even simple denim can be. Don't be afraid to experiment, and remember that the most stylish solutions often come from breaking old rules.
