Bootcut jeans: what they are, the cut, and what to wear them with

What are bootcut jeans?

Bootcut jeans - This is a style of denim trousers that fits snugly around the hips and flares out smoothly from the knee to the ankle.

The term literally translates from English as "tailored for boots" (boot - shoe, cut - cut). Historically, this style originated among cowboys and workers. The flared lower leg allowed jeans to be worn comfortably over tall boots, completely concealing the shaft.

Distinctive features of the style

The key feature of this style is its moderate flare. Unlike classic flare jeans, bootcuts have minimal flare. The hem is only slightly wider than the knee. The knee-length upper portion of the jeans has a slim or regular fit, accentuating the hip line.

These dark blue bootcut jeans create an elongated silhouette thanks to their fit at the hips and a slight flare at the bottom.

According to classic fit standards, the hem of bootcut jeans should cover at least half the heel of the shoe and extend to the toe at the front. A properly chosen length prevents pleats from forming at the bottom of the leg.

Traditional styles had a mid-rise or low waist. Modern versions are often high-rise. This cut visually lengthens the legs by creating a continuous vertical line from the waist to the floor.

What to combine with

When choosing footwear, pair bootcut jeans with ankle boots with a sturdy heel, cowboy boots, pointed-toe pumps, and platform shoes. The chunky last harmoniously fills the space under the flared leg.

Tucked-in basic T-shirts, silk blouses, and fitted turtlenecks are worn as tops. For a more formal look, the ensemble is complemented with structured, straight-cut jackets. Outerwear paired with this style includes classic trench coats, midi-length coats, and cropped leather biker jackets, all of which maintain the proportions of the silhouette.

Since bootcuts create a bit of volume at the bottom, it's recommended to avoid overly loose tops, such as long, oversized sweaters worn loose. Fitted or cropped pieces help maintain a proper balance of proportions.
