What is an A-line silhouette?

A-line silhouette — is a geometric shape of clothing cut that visually resembles the capital letter "A": narrow at the top (in the shoulder or waist area) and gradually widening towards the bottom.

А-силуэт - 1
Classic A-line skirt with a smooth flare from the waistline.

The term was coined by French couturier Christian Dior in 1955 as part of his spring "A-Line" collection. This cut became a natural evolution of the fitted New Look silhouette, offering women a looser yet structured shape.

The key design feature of this style is the absence of a strong emphasis on the hips. The smooth flare of the hem creates balanced proportions without the use of rigid frames or multi-layered, full petticoats.

Distinctive features

A smooth fit at the bodice or waist is the basic element of the cut. The flare is achieved solely by tapering the fabric pieces, without the use of gathers, tucks, or voluminous folds at the hips.

To create the correct geometry, the classic A-line silhouette requires fabrics with high dimensional stability. Most commonly used are dense cotton, molded linen, gabardine, tweed, or wool, which allow the flare line to remain defined and not fall off.

The silhouette is highly versatile and can be used in a variety of wardrobe categories. It's typical for one-piece dresses without a waistband, skirts (from 1960s-style minis to classic midi lengths), and outerwear like A-line coats.

What to combine with

A-line skirts require a fitted or tucked-in top to maintain the intended geometric contrast. Basic turtlenecks, knit bodysuits, and fitted shirts are ideal pairings.

А-силуэт - 4
Pair an A-line midi skirt with a fitted turtleneck and high boots.

When choosing outerwear for dresses and skirts of this cut, it's important to maintain proportions. It's recommended to wear either cropped jackets that reach to the waist or long, straight coats that completely cover the hem to avoid disrupting the flared silhouette.

Shoes should be selected strictly based on the length of the skirt. A-line miniskirts pair well with wide-shafted tube boots or over-the-knee boots. Midi skirts are best paired with pumps or ankle boots with a narrow shaft that fit snugly and accentuate the ankle.
