Lobster clasps in jewelry: types and applications

What is a lobster clasp?

Carabiner clasp A lobster clasp (a jewelry snap hook) is a fastening mechanism equipped with a spring-loaded latch that opens when a small protruding lever is pressed. In international terminology, this type of clasp is often called a lobster clasp or a crab clasp due to its visual resemblance to a crustacean claw.

The clasp consists of a hollow body containing a hidden spring and a movable claw. When the lever is released, the spring instantly returns the claw to its original position, securely locking the connecting ring onto the opposite end of the jewelry piece.

A jewelry lobster clasp is considered one of the strongest and most reliable types of clasps. Its design allows it to support the weight of massive chains, multi-tiered necklaces, and heavy pendants without the risk of accidental unclasp.

Main types

The teardrop (classic) lobster clasp has a streamlined teardrop shape with rounded edges. It's the most common option, attaching to basic gold and silver chains of fine and medium weave.

The rectangular carabiner is distinguished by its clean, geometric lines and flat profile. This type of clasp is most often used in men's jewelry, chain bracelets, and flat-bracelet items.

A decorative carabiner is an oversized clasp that functions as a stand-alone decoration. It can be encrusted with crystals, coated with colored enamel, or have a unique shape, such as a heart or star.

A double-ended carabiner (switch) features two opening ends. This mechanism is used to connect several individual chains into a single item or to attach large, removable pendants.

How to use in jewelry

From a functional standpoint, carabiners are chosen for bracelets and chains of medium and heavy weight. They are significantly stronger than thin spring (round) clasps and are less likely to deform with daily wear.

In modern styles, large decorative clasps are often worn at the front, making the clasp the main accent element of the necklace. Various charms, medallions, or pendants are also attached to this clasp.

Additional carabiners create a layered effect. The mechanism allows you to adjust the length of the chains, connect two short necklaces into one long sautoir, or attach a bracelet to a chain around your neck to create a unique asymmetry.

The carabiner mechanism requires protection from fine sand and thick cosmetics, which can jam the internal spring. If the clasp becomes loose or the spring breaks, the mechanism can be easily replaced in a jewelry workshop.
