What are espadrilles: features, types, and what to wear them with

What are espadrilles?

Espadrilles - These are lightweight summer shoes whose main feature is a sole woven from jute or rope (esparto), and an upper made of dense natural fabric, such as canvas, cotton or linen.

Historically, shoes originated in the 13th century in the Pyrenees on the border of Spain and France. Initially, they served as inexpensive and practical equipment for peasants. Espadrilles gained worldwide popularity in the 20th century thanks to artists such as Salvador Dalí and Pablo Picasso, as well as cinema.

In the 1970s, Yves Saint Laurent introduced a women's version with a wedge heel, making these shoes a fully-fledged high fashion staple. Modern models retain the traditional look, but for increased durability, the jute sole is often reinforced with a thin layer of vulcanized rubber.

Main types

Today, manufacturers produce a wide variety of espadrilles, adapting the traditional silhouette to suit different styles and purposes:

  • Classic flats (slip-ons): A traditional closed-toe, flat-soled shoe. Often complemented by a reinforced toe stitched with contrasting thread.
  • On a wedge: A feminine style with a raised heel that visually lengthens the legs. Typically secured at the ankle with long fabric straps or a narrow leather strap.

  • Mules and sandals: open-toe or backless variations that retain the signature jute sole trim.
  • Espadrille sneakers: A hybrid format that combines the upper of a classic lace-up sneaker with a woven rope sole.

What to combine with

Flat shoes are a perfect complement to any casual summer wardrobe. They pair perfectly with Bermuda shorts, cropped jeans, loose-fitting linen trousers, and basic T-shirts. Wedge espadrilles with ribbon detailing complement wrap dresses, midi sundresses, A-line skirts, and culottes.

These shoes require support from appropriate textures. Espadrilles look best with natural fabrics (linen, cotton, silk, denim) and accessories made of straw or raffia, such as woven totes and hats.

Espadrilles should not be worn with thick autumn-winter clothing, formal business suits, or nylon tights. These shoes should also not be worn in rainy weather due to jute's natural ability to absorb water, swell, and deform.
