Drop — is a format for releasing clothing, footwear, or accessories in small, limited edition batches outside of the traditional seasonal schedule.
The term comes from the English word drop (to fall, to release). The format originated in the 1990s in streetwear culture, particularly thanks to the Supreme brand, and among sneakerheads to create artificial scarcity and excitement around new models.
Unlike traditional seasonal collections (spring-summer, fall-winter), which are available for a long time, drops are targeted. They are often announced shortly before the launch, and items sell out in minutes.
Distinctive features
Items are produced in strictly limited quantities and, as a rule, are never reissued. This creates a sense of exclusivity and encourages quick purchases.
Drops often feature collaborative releases between mass-market and luxury brands, or between sportswear labels and artists or musicians. Examples include regular collaborations between sportswear giants and hip-hop artists, or capsule collections between affordable brands and historic fashion houses.
Sales take place through specialized brand apps, temporary pop-up stores, or raffles—online lotteries that grant the right to make a purchase.
Due to high demand and limited supply, drop-off items form a vibrant secondary market (resale). Rare wardrobe items are resold on specialized platforms at a significant premium, giving them investment potential.
