What is a low rise?
Low landing - is a cut of trousers, jeans, shorts or skirts in which the top edge of the garment (the waistband) is located significantly below the natural waistline, usually at the level of the pelvic bones.
Technically, the seat height (the distance from the crotch seam to the top of the waistband) in low-rise garments is less than 20 centimeters (about 7-8 inches).
The term gained widespread popularity in the late 1990s and early 2000s (the Y2K era). The cut's popularity was largely fueled by Alexander McQueen's 1993 collection, which featured "bumster" trousers that dramatically lowered the waist. This design technique challenged traditional proportions and emphasized the lower back.
Distinctive features
The main visual feature of this cut is the shift in body proportions. The low waist elongates the torso and accentuates the abdomen, hips, and pelvic bones.
The garment is held in place not by a narrow waist, but by a snug fit around the hips or the use of a belt. This requires precise darts and side seams to prevent the garment from slipping down as you move. These styles are often complemented by wide belt loops, which serve both a functional and decorative purpose.
There are two main types of cut: moderately low rise, where the waistband sits 3-5 centimeters below the navel, and ultra low rise, where the waistband sits directly on the hip bones, revealing the maximum amount of belly fat.
What to combine with
To recreate the classic aesthetic of the 2000s, low-waisted styles are paired with cropped tops. Crop tops, short cardigans, or T-shirts that leave a strip of skin exposed on the midriff are most common.
In a modern take, bodysuits, tight-fitting turtlenecks, or long shirts are used to create a balanced silhouette. They are tucked in, completely covering the stomach and shifting the emphasis to the hips.
Oversized tops, such as oversized sweaters or tailored jackets, paired with a dropped waist help tone down the revealing nature of the look. This makes low-rise pieces suitable for everyday urban style.
Shoes are chosen based on the width of your pants. Wide-leg jeans and low-waisted cargo pants are worn with chunky sneakers. Straight-leg or flared pants are paired with heels, such as pointed ankle boots or pumps, to visually elongate your legs.
