A couple of years ago, my client Anna burst into tears in the fitting room of a maternity store. Her tears were triggered by a pair of oversized, shapeless beige panties, which the saleswoman described as "as natural as possible." For Anna, accustomed to delicate lace and silk, this piece of cotton parachute symbolized the idea that pregnancy meant she would have to say goodbye to her femininity.

We left that store immediately. And you know what? Maternity underwear doesn't have to be ugly. In fact, you won't need special "maternity" styles until at least your seventh month.
Unlike most guides that encourage you to accept the loss of aesthetics for the sake of comfort, I'll show you a different path. Over 12 years of working as a personal stylist, I've developed a clear formula for preserving a beautiful lingerie drawer without harming your health or spending hundreds of euros on items you'll only wear a few times. We've already discussed adapting your entire wardrobe to new shapes in our The complete guide to stylish maternity clothes , and today we’ll look at the foundation of any look – lingerie.
Maternity Underwear: Why the "wear-it-all" rule doesn't work

While your favorite oversized jacket can be worn unbuttoned until the baby is due, the same trick won't work with underwear. Clothing can be forgiving of changes in proportions, but underwear never is.
According to the British Medical Journal (BMJ, 2022), during pregnancy, the chest cavity increases by an average of 5–7 centimeters. This occurs not only due to weight gain but also due to the physical separation of the lower ribs—the body makes room for the growing uterus. This is why your usual 75B bra begins to feel unbearably tight, even if the cups still fit.
Many women make a fatal mistake: buying extenders (fabric clasp extenders) for their pre-pregnancy underwire bras. This is the worst thing you can do in the third trimester.
Why? Because the extender only increases the length of the back band. The metal underwires remain narrow and begin to dig into the expanding ribcage on the sides, damaging the developing milk ducts. As the British Association of Breast Surgeons notes, such localized pressure is a direct path to lymph congestion and early lactostasis.
There's also a psychological aspect. When your body changes daily, you lose control of it. During this period, beautiful but not constricting underwear becomes a powerful anchor for self-esteem. It's a foundation that says, "I'm still attractive and I take care of myself."
Shopping Timeline: When and What to Change in Your Lingerie Drawer

The biggest financial mistake expectant mothers make is rushing to the store in the eighth week to buy nursing bras. By the 35th week, they'll be hopelessly too small, and the money (an average of €40–€80 for a quality bra) will be a waste.
In my work I always rely on Cost Per Wear formula For an investment to pay off, an item should last for months, not weeks. Therefore, I recommend taking a strict inventory: put all the rigid push-ups and thongs on the top shelf. To remember what you have in your closet, scan them into an app. MioLook — a smart AI stylist will help you create great looks from your remaining basics, and outdated underwear can be virtually "frozen" until next year.
First and second trimesters: making do with a seamless base
You don't need maternity wear until your sixth or seventh month. The most affordable and stylish option is to buy high-quality, seamless, laser-cut underwear from a regular mass-market store, just buy one or two sizes larger than your current size.

Why does it work? Seamless bralette tops and briefs (like the basic Intimissimi, Oysho, or Uniqlo AIRism lines) are stretchy in all directions. They will adapt to your body until the end of the second trimester. What's more, you can wear them even after giving birth, as your body gradually returns to its previous size.
Pay attention to the composition. Contrary to popular belief, 100% cotton is not the best choice for everyday underwear during pregnancy. Cotton takes a long time to dry and, when wet (and pregnant women sweat more), can chafe the skin. According to the Textile Testing Institute (Textile Exchange report, 2023), blended fabrics made from micromodal or viscose with 10–15% elastane absorb 50% more moisture and provide better temperature regulation.
Important limitation: This trick with basic bralettes that go up a size works great for women with cup sizes up to a C or less than a D. If you have a naturally full bust (sizes E, F, G), seamless tops won't provide the support you need, and you'll have to move on to the next step as early as your fourth month.
Third trimester: investing in specialized support
Around week 28, the weight of your belly and breasts reaches a point where regular underwear can no longer cope. Your center of gravity shifts, putting enormous strain on your spine. Now is the time to invest in specially designed underwear.

Start for freeThe Perfect Maternity Bra: The Anatomy of Comfort

If we completely abandon hard underwires, what holds up the breasts? The designer's answer: the waistband and the back design.
The right bra for the third trimester should have a band that's 2-3 times wider than usual (at least 3-4 cm of a firm but elastic band). The band, not the straps, bears 80% of the breast weight. Look for a U-shaped back—this design distributes the weight between the shoulders and shoulder blades, preventing slouching.
Clients often ask, "Should I buy a nursing bra with special clips on the straps right away?" My advice is to buy one basic one to try out for the hospital (breasts often expand rapidly when milk comes in, and it's difficult to guess the right size in advance). For the last months of pregnancy, it's best to look for a bra with soft, molded cups.
Returning to Anna's story, with which I began this article, we found stunningly beautiful lace maternity lingerie in the H&M Conscious line (in the €30-€40 range) and from the Dutch brand Hunkemöller. They have styles with delicate Chantilly lace that are visually indistinguishable from premium French brands, but they are lined with soft cotton on the inside, and flexible silicone pads replace underwire.
Maternity panties: belly-hugging or high-waisted?

In the world of maternity bras, there are two opposing camps: those who love to wear their underwear all the way to their ribs, and those who can't stand even a millimeter of fabric on their stomach. The choice depends solely on the season and your skin sensitivity.

- V-neck (under-the-belly fit): The perfect option for summer. The front of the panties is cut so they sit directly under the belly without causing any pressure. A huge plus is that they're invisible under tight knit dresses, which are so flattering during this time of year.
- High waist (on the stomach): A lifesaver for the cold season. They provide light support (not to be confused with a medical brace!) and protect the lower back from drafts. When buying, make sure the top edge doesn't have a tight elastic band—the fabric should simply taper off or have a seamless edge.
Thongs are out. Due to changes in microflora and decreased immunity during pregnancy, doctors strongly recommend avoiding this style. My clients' favorites are laser-cut briefs and seamless culottes. The latter are especially good for sleeping.
Hidden helpers: anti-chafing shorts and the right bandages

I'll let you in on a key insider secret that 90% of women forget when packing their summer wardrobe. Starting in the second trimester, even the slenderest women experience a change in gait and swelling. The inner thighs begin to rub against each other. Talc and deodorant last only an hour.
An absolute must-have that will save your summer walks: these ultra-thin anti-chafing shorts with a special stretchable belly pad. For €20–€35, you can wear any flowing dresses and skirts without pain or discomfort. They're invisible under clothing and act as a lightweight shapewear layer.
Regarding support belts in the form of tight panties, be careful. They're often a marketing gimmick. A true support belt should be fitted by an orthopedist or gynecologist and worn over regular underwear. Panties with a "built-in support belt" are usually simply too tight and can constrict blood flow to the pelvic area if you sit in the office for more than two hours.
Office workers also need the right tights. For a business dress code, choose 20-40 denier tights with a special anatomical insert on the stomach. The main rule: the waistband of the tights should be at least 5 centimeters wide, otherwise it will bunch up and dig into the skin under the breasts.
Stylist Checklist: 9-Month Lingerie Capsule

I'm a proponent of minimalism and smart consumption. You don't need mountains of special underwear. For a comfortable nine-month stay, all you need is a compact, yet perfectly functional capsule.
The optimal composition of a lingerie wardrobe:
- 3 bras (tops). My golden rule of bra rotation applies here: "One on, one in the wash, one resting in the closet." Elastane needs 24 hours to regain its shape after wearing, so never wear the same bra two days in a row.
- 7-10 pairs of panties. A mix of V-neck and high-waist styles (depending on the season).
- 2 pairs of anti-chafing shorts (for spring/summer) or 3 pairs of maternity tights (for autumn/winter).
Color tip: Eliminate pure white from your basic shopping list entirely. A white bra will show through any light-colored clothing, creating a stark contrast with your skin. Your base colors should be nude (choose a color that closely matches your skin tone), cappuccino, mocha, and classic black.
